What A Class Fencing builds
About Our Paddock & Livestock Fences
Paddock fences need to be tough enough to contain animals, visible enough to keep them safe, and durable enough to handle daily contact. A Class Fencing builds paddock and small-pen fencing for horse properties, cattle dry-lots, sheep pens, and mixed-livestock operations.

More About Paddock & Livestock Fences
Built For Alberta — The A Class Way
Paddock and livestock fencing around Calgary needs to balance several priorities at once: visibility (so animals don't run into it), strength (so they don't push through it), safety (no sharp edges or tight spaces that injure), and longevity (because patching a paddock every spring isn't anyone's idea of fun). A Class Fencing builds paddock fencing for horse properties, dairy and beef operations, and small livestock owners across Foothills County, Rocky View County, Mountain View County, and surrounding ranching country.
Our most-requested paddock builds combine flexible vinyl rail or wood post-and-rail on top with no-climb V-mesh wire underneath. The rail keeps the fence visible and gives the structure; the wire keeps small livestock contained and predators out. We also install electric top wire or rope for added training reinforcement, and run dedicated grounding for electric systems that won't quit in dry summers.

Whether you're building a single 50x100 turn-out, a series of paddocks off a barn, or sectioning a larger pasture into rotation paddocks, A Class Fencing will spec the materials to match the species and use. Horses need different spacing than cattle. Goats and sheep need tighter mesh than horses. We've fenced for everything from miniature horses to draft teams to commercial cattle, and we'll get yours right.
Paddock fences in Alberta deal with heavy daily wear — animals rubbing on rails, pushing on wire, leaning at gates, and weather pounding posts. A Class Fencing builds for this with pressure-treated 6x6 corner posts set 4 feet deep in concrete, 4x4 line posts, structural-grade rail attachments (no nails — screws or through-bolts), and wire tensioned correctly. The result is paddock fence that doesn't sag, lean, or break under daily livestock pressure.

Paddock fence cost depends on the build — basic 3-rail wood post-and-rail without wire runs in the mid-range, vinyl rail with no-climb wire backing is the most-installed configuration and runs higher, and full no-climb V-mesh with rail and electric tops is at the top end. Gates add to the total — paddock gates need to be heavy enough to handle being leaned on and wide enough for tractors and trucks. We quote each paddock as its own line item so you can adjust scope by section.
Maintenance is mostly a quick walk-and-tighten in spring: check the wire tension, look for rail attachment wear, tighten gate hinges, inspect electric system grounding. A Class Fencing paddock fences are designed to need very little — most clients walk them once a year and call it good.

Every paddock build comes with a workmanship warranty in writing. Process: walk the property and lay out the paddocks together, get a written quote within 48 hours, deposit confirms the install date. Typical single-paddock build is 2-4 days; multi-paddock barn setups 4-10 days. Call (403) 971-4882 to get started.

Common Questions
Paddock & Livestock Fences FAQ
What's the safest paddock fence for horses?
+
Flexible vinyl rail (3 or 4-rail) on top with no-climb V-mesh wire underneath, optionally with a hot top-wire for training. The vinyl flexes when a horse leans on it, the V-mesh keeps hooves from going through, and the hot wire keeps them off the rail in the first place. Heights of 54-60 inches work for most paddocks.
What spacing do I need for cattle vs horses vs goats?
+
Cattle: 3-rail spacing is fine; bottom rail 12-18 inches off the ground. Horses: 4-rail spacing with no gaps over 8 inches; height 54-60 inches. Goats and sheep: tighter mesh (2x4 V-mesh or page wire) since they push through gaps. We spec per species during the on-site walk.
Do I need electric on a paddock fence?
+
Not always, but it's strongly recommended for horses to stop rail-chewing and leaning, and for cattle to reinforce the perimeter. A single hot top-wire or rope is usually enough. We install dedicated grounding rods so the system actually works in dry Alberta summers — without proper grounding, electric fences are unreliable.
What's the best gate width for a paddock?
+
12-ft minimum if you ever want to drive a tractor or pickup through. 14-16 ft is common for multi-paddock barns where you're moving equipment between sections. Walk-through pedestrian gates are typically 4-5 ft wide. We install heavy-duty hinges that handle being leaned on by livestock.
Can you build a round pen for training?
+
Yes. Round pens are typically 50-60 ft diameter, built with continuous-rail panels or solid-rail vinyl. We've built training round pens for horse properties across the foothills and Foothills County.
