What A Class Fencing builds
About Our Wood Decks
A well-built deck turns a back yard into a living space you actually use — from spring chinook afternoons to long summer evenings. A Class Fencing designs and builds custom wood decks across Calgary in western red cedar and pressure-treated lumber, engineered with footings below the Alberta frost line so they don't heave, twist, or pull away from the house. Prefer zero upkeep? Ask about our composite and vinyl decks.

More About Wood Decks
Built For Alberta — The A Class Way
A Class Fencing builds custom wood decks across Calgary, Airdrie, Chestermere, Cochrane, Okotoks, High River, Strathmore, Langdon, and the surrounding foothills. From a simple ground-level platform off the back door to a multi-level deck with stairs, built-in benches, privacy screens, and a pergola, we design and build it to suit your yard, your grade, and how you actually want to use the space. Every deck we build is engineered for Alberta — concrete or screw-pile footings set below the frost line, properly flashed ledger connections, and structural hardware rated for our freeze-thaw swings.
Choosing between the two wood options comes down to budget, look, and how much maintenance you want to take on. Pressure-treated spruce is the most affordable and, sealed properly, lasts decades — the workhorse of Calgary decks. Western red cedar is naturally rot-resistant, stays cool underfoot, and takes stain beautifully for a premium look. If you'd rather never stain a deck again, our composite decks (Trex, TimberTech, and similar) and waterproof vinyl decks are the maintenance-free routes — just ask and we'll compare all of them on-site. No upsell, just honest advice.

The part of a deck you don't see is the part that decides whether it lasts. A deck is a structure, not just a surface, and Calgary's frost line makes the foundation critical. A Class Fencing sets footings on concrete piles or helical screw piles driven below the frost line so winter heave can't lift a corner and rack the whole frame. Ledger boards are lag-bolted and flashed to keep water out of the house rim joist, joists are spaced and hung with galvanized or stainless hardware, and every guard and stair is built to the height and spacing the Alberta Building Code requires.
Calgary weather is hard on a wood deck. We get more sunny days than almost any major Canadian city, so UV bleaches and dries out untreated wood fast. Chinook freeze-thaw cycles work footings and fasteners loose if they weren't set right. Heavy spring snow loads sit on the surface, and summer hail tests the boards. A Class Fencing builds for all of it: frost-depth footings, hot-dipped galvanized or stainless structural hardware, proper board gapping for drainage and expansion, and a recommended stain schedule matched to your sun exposure so the wood lasts.
Walk-out deck with stairs

Wood deck cost in Calgary depends on size, height off the ground, material, and features. As a rough guide, a pressure-treated deck typically runs $30 to $45 per square foot installed and cedar $45 to $65 — stairs, multiple levels, railings, privacy screens, pergolas, and skirting all add to the total. A small ground-level platform is at the low end; a raised, multi-level cedar deck with glass or aluminum railing is at the top. (Composite and PVC builds are priced on our composite decks page.) We never quote sight-unseen — the only honest number comes from walking the yard, checking the grade and the house connection, and putting it in writing.
Maintenance on a wood deck is mostly about UV and moisture. Pressure-treated and cedar decks want a clean and a fresh coat of penetrating stain or sealer every 2 to 4 years to fight Alberta UV and moisture — skip it and the boards grey, check, and shorten their lifespan. If that upkeep isn't for you, our composite and vinyl decks need essentially none. We'll set realistic expectations for whichever route you choose so there are no surprises down the road.

Common Questions
Wood Decks FAQ
Do I need a permit to build a deck in Calgary?
+
Usually, yes. The City of Calgary requires a building/development permit for decks more than 0.6 m (about 24 inches) above grade, decks with a roof, and most decks attached to the house. Ground-level platforms below that height often don't need one. A Class Fencing reviews the requirements for your specific build and handles the permit application and inspections as part of the project.
Pressure-treated or cedar — which wood is best for my deck?
+
It's a trade-off of cost vs look. Pressure-treated spruce is the most affordable and lasts decades when sealed. Cedar looks and feels premium, stays cooler underfoot, and resists rot naturally, but still wants periodic staining. If you'd rather skip staining altogether, look at our composite decks or waterproof vinyl decks. We help you weigh all of it during the free on-site consultation.
How deep do deck footings need to go in Alberta?
+
Below the frost line — roughly 1.2 m (4 ft) in the Calgary area. We set decks on concrete piles or helical screw piles driven below frost depth so chinook freeze-thaw cycles can't heave a footing and rack the frame. Screw piles are fast, clean, and excellent in tight or hard-to-dig yards; concrete piles are the traditional option. We spec the right footing for your soil and load.
Can you match a new deck to my house and existing yard?
+
Yes. We design the deck to suit your grade, door heights, sightlines, and how you want to use the space — single or multi-level, stairs where they make sense, built-in benches and planters, privacy screens, pergolas, and railing styles from pressure-treated pickets to glass or aluminum. We'll lay it out with you before anything gets built.
How long does it take to build a deck?
+
Most residential decks take 3 to 7 working days on site once materials are in, depending on size, height off the ground, stairs, and railing type. Larger multi-level builds or decks with screened rooms and pergolas take longer. Permit processing time is separate and we factor it into the schedule when we book your build.
