More About Chain Link Fences

Built For Alberta — The A Class Way

A Class Fencing installs residential and commercial chain link fences across Calgary, Airdrie, Chestermere, Cochrane, Okotoks, and surrounding communities. Whether you need a 4-ft chain link fence for a dog run, a 6-ft chain link enclosure for the back yard, or a black vinyl-coated chain link fence that blends into your landscaping, we install everything to commercial-grade specs at residential pricing.

Our residential chain link fences use 11.5 to 9-gauge mesh on schedule 40 galvanized posts, with top rail and tension bands — not the cheap clamp-and-tie installs you see fail after a few seasons. Chain link is one of the most cost-effective fence options in Calgary, and when installed correctly, it stands up to chinook winds, heavy snow loads, and rambunctious dogs without a problem.

Black vinyl-coated chain link is one of the fastest-growing options for Calgary homes. The dark coating is rust-resistant, almost disappears against grass and trees, and looks far more refined than traditional galvanized mesh. A Class Fencing also installs privacy slats, top barbed wire (where permitted), and custom walk-through and double-drive gates to match.

Chain link handles Calgary weather better than almost any other fence material. The galvanized coating doesn't crack in -30°C cold, doesn't warp in +30°C summers, and the open mesh lets chinook wind pass through instead of catching it like a solid privacy fence does. That makes chain link an excellent choice for wind-exposed lots in Airdrie, Cochrane, and acreage country, as well as east-facing Calgary yards. We do recommend the heavier 9-gauge mesh on exposed lots and properties with larger dogs that push against the fence.

Chain link is also the most cost-effective fence option in Calgary. A standard 4-ft galvanized residential install typically runs $20 to $35 per linear foot; black vinyl-coated runs slightly higher; 6-ft heights and heavier-gauge mesh add to the total. Commercial-grade builds with schedule 40 posts and 9-gauge mesh sit at the upper end. Compared to wood at $40-$70 or vinyl at $50-$90 per foot, chain link is the entry point for serious fence at honest pricing — and the lifespan is just as long when it's built right.

Maintenance on chain link is essentially nothing. The galvanized coating handles rust for 30+ years; vinyl coating extends that further. No staining, no sealing, no painting. The only common maintenance items are gate hardware tightening every few seasons and the occasional snow-shovel ding to a top rail — both quick fixes. A Class Fencing chain link installations regularly last 30-40 years with no significant maintenance.

Common Questions

Chain Link Fences FAQ

Is black vinyl-coated chain link worth the upgrade over galvanized?

+

For visible-from-the-yard installs, usually yes. The black coating is more refined, blends into landscaping and trees so the fence visually disappears, and adds a rust-resistance layer on top of the galvanized core. For utility runs (dog kennels, side yards, back property line behind landscaping) galvanized is perfectly fine and saves you money.

What gauge of chain link mesh do you install?

+

Residential builds typically use 11.5-gauge for light use or 9-gauge for heavier use, dogs, or wind exposure. Commercial installs default to 9-gauge. The lower the gauge number, the thicker the wire. A Class Fencing recommends 9-gauge on exposed lots and properties with large dogs that push on the fence.

Can chain link contain a digging dog?

+

Yes, with the right setup. We can install a bottom tension wire that anchors the mesh tightly to ground level, run the mesh down into a buried trench, or add ground stakes or an L-footer of mesh laid flat just below the surface on the dog's side. We'll spec it based on your dog and your yard during the free estimate.

How long does chain link last in Calgary?

+

30 to 40+ years for a properly-built install. The galvanized coating handles rust for decades and vinyl-coated extends it further. Most failure points are at gates (hardware wear) and at posts that were never set properly in concrete — both of which we engineer out from the start.

Do I need a permit for a chain link fence in Calgary?

+

Fences over 1.85 m (about 6 ft) on a residential property line need a City of Calgary development permit. Most residential chain link runs at 4 ft or 6 ft. A Class Fencing handles any required permit and the Alberta One-Call utility locate as part of every install.
